Strength inside.
Character outside.
The structural requirements of a modern building or canopy do not always suit a traditional cast column.
Leander's hybrid approach separates the two functions:
The internal core provides the structure.
The cast components provide the architectural appearance.
This gives engineers and designers considerably greater flexibility while retaining the proportions, detailing and character associated with traditional cast columns.
Heritage & Architectural Columns
Traditional cast column designs and engineered structural columns for heritage, conservation and architectural projects.
Leander Architectural designs and manufactures heritage and architectural columns for canopies, verandas, railway stations, entrances, shelters, covered walkways and traditional building projects. Our extensive range of existing foundry patterns can be used to create decorative columns and column components, or combined with a modern structural core they can form our hybrid structural column system. This allows the appearance and detailing of a traditional cast column to be combined with the strength and flexibility of a modern engineered structure.
Leander has a range of fully cast columns (available in Aluminium, iron or even bronze!) that can be utilised where appropriate. These usually require a lot more design and engineering input prior to selection.
What type of column do you need?

Heritage Structural Columns
Traditional cast appearance with a modern structural core
Our hybrid structural columns combine a structural steel core with decorative cast aluminium column bases, collars, capitals and other architectural details.
The structural core and interface, can be engineered for the individual project while the cast components provide the traditional appearance and character required.
Ideal for:
Canopies
Verandas
Internal supporting columns
Railway stations
Entrances
Covered walkways
Shelters
Heritage structures
Decorative Columns & Components
Traditional architectural detailing without a structural requirement
Where the column is mainly decorative, or where the structural support is being provided separately, components can be easily selected from our extensive range of existing architectural castings.
Ideal for:
Decorative structures
Restoration
Existing buildings
Fabricator-built structures
Replacement components
Architectural detailing

✓ Traditional appearance
Decorative cast aluminium components recreate the appearance and detailing associated with traditional cast columns.
✓ Existing patterns
Our extensive archive of column bases, collars, capitals and decorative components can reduce the need for new pattern tooling.
✓ Easier handling
Cast aluminium decorative components are substantially lighter than equivalent traditional cast-iron components.
✓ Adaptable
Column height, structural core, decorative components, fixing arrangement and finish can be configured to suit the project.
✓ Complete Leander capability
Design, casting, fabrication, finishing and assembly can be coordinated through one specialist manufacturer.
Configure Your Column
Most projects start with a few simple decisions
1
Choose the
Architectural Style
Select suitable bases, collars, capitals and other details from our established range.
2
Tell Us the Required Height
Provide the overall column height and any important levels or interfaces.
3
Structural or decorative?
Tell us whether the column needs to carry structural loads. If structural, provide available structural information or drawings.
4
What is it supporting?
Example: Canopy, Veranda , Roof, Walkway, Entrance feature, Signage or Other structure
5
Choose the fixing arrangement
Depending on the project, columns can be designed for suitable rooted or baseplate/bolt-down arrangements.
6
Finish
Tell us the required colour or project finish where known.
Requesting a column quotation
Send us as much of the following as you have:
- Quantity of columns
- Overall height
- Preferred column/style/reference (if known)
- Structural or decorative application
- What the columns are supporting
- Approximate structural loads (if available)
- Preferred fixing arrangement (if known)
- Project location / delivery postcode
- Finish / colour
- Architectural or structural drawings (where available)

Add a Title
Leander holds an extensive collection of existing patterns for traditional column bases, collars, capitals and decorative architectural components. These components can be combined in different ways to create columns appropriate to individual buildings and structures. This allows many projects to start from proven existing designs rather than requiring completely new decorative tooling.
Where a project requires something genuinely different, bespoke or reproduction components can also be developed.
Your Structural Engineer provides the required column size/specification and we develop the decorative column arrangement around the structural core.

Replacement & reproduction columns
Restoring a historic building or structure?
Leander can help with the repair, replacement or reproduction of traditional architectural columns and column components.
We can work from:
• Existing components
• Historic drawings
• Photographs
• Site dimensions
• Surviving patterns
• New CAD information
Where appropriate, an existing historic column can be recreated using a modern structural core with new decorative cast components, providing a practical route to retaining the original architectural appearance.

Replacement Cast Iron Columns
Looking to reproduce the appearance of an existing cast iron column?
Historic cast iron columns are found in railway stations, verandas, canopies, markets, entrances and many traditional buildings.
Depending on the structural and conservation requirements of the project, Leander can faithfully manufacture cast iron components, reproduce historic details, or create a modern hybrid structural column using cast aluminium decorative components around an engineered steel core.
The appropriate solution will depend upon the existing structure, required appearance and engineering requirements.

Materials & Construction

Decorative castings
Our standard decorative column components are normally manufactured in LM6 cast aluminium.
Alternative casting materials can often be considered where specifically required. Leander has experience producing architectural components in materials including cast iron and bronze.

Structural cores
Structural columns will typically incorporate an appropriately designed steel core, usually protected to suit the application.
The final construction is selected according to the structural, architectural and environmental requirements of the project.

Columns for Canopies & Verandas
Complete column solutions for traditional structures
Heritage Structural Columns are particularly suited to:
Entrance canopies, Verandas, Railway platform canopies, Covered walkways, Shelters, Pavilions and lastly Traditional roof structures
Leander can supply columns as individual components or as part of a wider architectural metalwork project.

Railway & Heritage Columns
Traditional columns for railway environments
Leander manufactures architectural columns and components for railway stations and heritage transport projects, including new structures, restoration work and replacement historic components.
Our ability to combine casting, fabrication and structural column construction is particularly useful where a traditional station appearance needs to be recreated while satisfying the requirements of a modern structure.
